The wheels of conference realignment are turning again.
If you lost track of all the changes that will be coming in the next few years, I’ve got you covered. Here’s a breakdown by conference.
Southeastern Conference
Joining: Oklahoma, Texas
Leaving: None
Sooners and Longhorns officials have said publicly that they plan to stay in the Big 12 until 2025 rather than pay a massive exit fee to leave early. The Big 12 said no discussions have taken place about either school leaving earlier. So, unless something changes, we’re still a few years away from this massive move.
Big Ten Conference
Joining: Southern Cal, UCLA
Leaving: None
In the biggest bombshell of 2022, the two SoCal schools announced that they will leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten in 2024. The Big Ten will grow to 16 schools with the move.
Pac-12 Conference
Joining: None
Leaving: Southern Cal, UCLA
Two flagship members of the Pac-12 will leave for the Big Ten in 2024. What the Pac-12 decides to do next will set off the next wave of moves.
Big 12 Conference
Joining: BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, Houston
Leaving: Oklahoma, Texas
BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston will join the Big 12 in 2023, meaning that — unless something changes and Oklahoma and Texas leave early — the Big 12 will have 14 teams for two years before going back down to 12 in 2025.
American Athletic Conference
Joining: Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB, UTEP
Leaving: UCF, Cincinnati, Houston
Moving day will be July 1, 2023. That’s when the three departing teams head to the Big 12 and the six incoming teams join from Conference USA.
Sun Belt Conference
Joining: James Madison, Marshall, Old Dominion, Southern Miss
Leaving: Little Rock, UT-Arlington
All of these changes took place July 1, 2022. Little Rock and UT-Arlington, the conference’s two non-football playing members, departed for conferences that are less football-centric.
Conference USA
Joining: Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston
Leaving: Charlotte, FAU, Marshall, North Texas, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Miss, UAB, UTEP
Conference USA will experience the biggest changes with 9 schools leaving and 5 joining. Marshall, Old Dominion and Southern Miss departed for the Sun Belt on July 1, 2022 and the other six will leave for the AAC in 2023. Four of the five newcomers are expected to join in 2023, with Kennesaw State to follow in 2024.
Atlantic Sun Conference
Joining: Austin Peay, Queens
Leaving: Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Liberty
Austin Peay joined July 1, 2022 as the ASUN fields an FCS football conference for the first time. Queens University of Charlotte, which does not play football, also joined. That puts the conference at 14 full members and 6 football members before Jacksonville State and Liberty depart for Conference USA in 2023, and Kennesaw State follows in 2024. Liberty’s football program already plays at the FBS level but the conference may seed to find a replacement for Jacksonville State.
Western Athletic Conference
Joining: Southern Utah, UT-Arlington
Leaving: Chicago State, Lamar, New Mexico State, Sam Houston
The two newcomers joined July 1, 2022 as Chicago State departed for a home still to be determined. New Mexico State and Sam Houston will leave for Conference USA in 2023, and that’s also when Lamar will head back to the Southland. Incarnate Word had announced its intention to leave the Southland for the WAC, but chose instead to remain in the Southland. Come 2023, the conference will have 11 full members, 5 of which are football-playing members. UT-Rio Grande Valley, already a full member, plans to start a football team by 2024.
Colonial Athletic Association
Joining: Hampton, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T, Stony Brook
Leaving: James Madison
The CAA grew from 10 full members to 13 on July 1, 2022. All four newcomers joined as full members but North Carolina A&T won’t join for football until 2023. Stony Brook was already an affiliate member for football and is now a full member. The league’s football conference grew from 12 teams to 13, and will grow to 14 in 2023 (six football-playing members are affiliate members for football only).
Missouri Valley Conference
Joining: Belmont, Illinois Chicago, Murray State
Leaving: Loyola Chicago
The MVC grew from 10 full members to 12 on July 1, 2022. The conference lost one of its better men’s basketball programs in Loyola but gained two perennially strong programs with Belmont and Murray State, while keeping a presence in Chicago with UIC. (Murray State will also join the Missouri Valley Football Conference beginning in 2023.)
Atlantic 10 Conference
Joining: Loyola Chicago
Leaving: None
The Atlantic 10 fortified its basketball strength by adding Loyola, which joined July 1, 2022.
Ohio Valley Conference
Joining: Lindenwood, Little Rock, Southern Indiana
Leaving: Austin Peay, Belmont, Murray State
The OVC lost two members to the ASUN last year, dropping from 12 full members to 10. The league held at 10 on July 1, 2022 as three departures were offset by Little Rock joining from the Sun Belt and Southern Indiana and Lindenwood moving up from Division II. Lindenwood is the only one of those three that plays football, leaving the conference with just 6 football-playing members in 2023 when Murray State’s football program leaves for the MVFC. The OVC will team up with the Big South in a new football agreement.
Southland Conference
Joining: Lamar, Texas A&M-Commerce
Leaving: None
After losing 5 members in 2021 (4 to the WAC and 1 to the ASUN), the Southland climbed to 9 members when Texas A&M-Commerce moved up from Division II on July 1, 2022. Lamar will return to the Southland from the WAC in 2023, upping WAC membership to 10 teams. Incarnate Word had announced its intention to leave the Southland for the WAC, but chose instead to remain in the Southland.
Big South Conference
Joining: None
Leaving: Hampton, North Carolina A&T
Losing Hampton and North Carolina A&T dropped the Big South from 12 full members to 10 on July 1, 2022. The conference also lost three affiliate members in football: Monmouth to the CAA, and North Alabama and Kennesaw State to the ASUN. North Carolina A&T will stick around for football only in 2022 before leaving in 2023. The conference will drop to five football members (3 full members, existing affiliate member Robert Morris and Bryant, which joined as an affiliate member on July 1, 2022). The Big South will team up with the OVC to maintain a path to the FCS football playoffs.
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
Joining: Mount St. Mary’s
Leaving: Monmouth
The MAAC lost Monmouth but added Mount St. Mary’s on July 1, 2022.
Big Sky Conference
Joining: None
Leaving: Southern Utah
Losing Southern Utah on July 1, 2022 dropped the Big Sky from 11 full members to 10. The conference also has two affiliate members for football.
Horizon League
Joining: None
Leaving: Illinois-Chicago
Losing UIC on July 1, 2022 dropped the Horizon League from 12 members to 11.
West Coast Conference
Joining: None
Leaving: BYU
Losing BYU will drop the WCC from 10 members to 9 in 2023. BYU joined the conference in 2011 when it went independent with its football program. Joining the Big 12 gives the Cougars a home for all sports.
America East Conference
Joining: Bryant
Leaving: Hartford, Stony Brook
America East will drop from 10 full members to 8 in the next couple years. Stony Brook left on July 1, 2022 for the CAA, while Bryant joined from the NEC. Hartford could leave as early as this summer as it begins its transition down to Division III.
Northeast Conference
Joining: Stonehill
Leaving: Bryant, Mount St. Mary’s
Bryant left for America East and Mount St. Mary’s left for the MAAC on July 1, 2022, while Stonehill College moved up from Division II to join the conference. Bryant’s football team joined the Big South as an affiliate member.
